REGÊNCIA VERBAL

This is the third lesson in the series on verbal regency. In the first two lessons, we studied verbs that are used with the prepositions de and em.” Today we’re going to study verbs that are used with the preposition “a.”

1. Agradecer a To thank

Eu agradeço a todos vocês por assistirem a este vídeo. I thank everyone for watching this video.

Fernando agradeceu a sua esposa pelo present. Fernando thanked his wife for the present.

2. Ajudar a To help

O pai ajudou o filho a fazer o dever de casa. The father helped his son do the homework

O bombeiro ajudou a apagar o fogo. The fireman helped put out the fire.

3. Aprender a To learn

Eu estou aprendendo a falar italiano. I am learning to speak Italian.

Carlos aprendeu a nadar. Carlos learned to swim.

4. Assistir a To watch

Eu assisti um filme ontem à noite. (informal) I watched a movie last night. (informal)

Eu assisti a um filme ontem à noite. (padrão) I watched a movie last night. (standard)

Você está assistindo uma aula de português. (informal) You are attending a Portuguese class. (informal)

Você está assistindo a uma aula de português. (padrão) You are attending a Portuguese class. (standard)

5. Chegar a To arrive

Eu cheguei em casa. (informal) I got home. (informal)

Eu cheguei a casa. (padrão) I arrived at home. (standard)

Ele chegou no trabalho. (informal) He got to work. (informal)

Ele chegou ao trabalho. (padrão) Ele chegou ao trabalho. (padrão)

6. Começar a To start

Vou começar a cozinhar o jantar. I’m going to start cooking dinner.

Começou a chover há poucos minutos. It started raining a few minutes ago.

7. Continuar a (To continue)

Vou continuar a ensinar português. I will continue to teach Portuguese.

Carol continua a trabalhar em seu projeto. (Carol continues to work on her project.)

8. Dar a To give

A mãe dá atenção às crianças. The mother gives attention to her children

Dei um presente a minha mãe. I gave a present to my mom.

9. Dedicar a To dedicate

Ele se dedica muitíssimo ao trabalho. He really dedicates himself to his work.

Ela dedicou sua vida à medicina. She dedicated her life to medicine.

10. Ensinar a To teach

Eu ensino meus alunos a falarem português. I teach my students to speak Portuguese. (informal)

Os pais ensinam bons valores a seus filhos. Parents teach good values to their children.

11. Habituar-se a To get used to/adapt to

Pedro se habituou ao novo horário de trabalho. Pedro got used to the new work schedule.

Eles se habituaram à nova cidade. They adapted to the new city.

12. Ir a To go to

Ele foi no supermercado. (informal) He went to the grocery store. (standard)

Ele foi ao supermercado. (padrão) He went to the grocery store. (informal)

Ele foi na universidade. (informal) He went to the university. (informal)

Ele foi à universidade. (padrão) He went to the university. (standard)

13. Obedecer a To obey

As crianças devem obedecer aos pais. Children should obey their parents.

Ela obedeceu às orientações do médico. She obeyed the doctor’s instructions.

14. Opor-se a To oppose

O pai se opôs ao casamento da filha. The father opposed his daughter’s marriage.

Os estudantes se opuseram às novas regras da universidade. The students opposed the university’s new rules.

15. Pagar a To pay

Ele pagou a dívida ao banco. He paid his debt to the bank.

Ela pagou o imposto ao governo. She paid the tax to the government.

16. Pedir a To ask

Ele pediu um conselho ao amigo. He asked his friend for advice.

Aninha pediu permissão ao pai para ir ao cinema. Aninha asked her father for permission to go to the movies.

17. Pertencer a To belong to

O livro pertence à biblioteca. The book belongs to the library.

O livro pertence à biblioteca.This car belongs to my friend.

18. Reagir a To react to

O paciente reagiu bem ao tratamento. The patient reacted well to treatment.

O paciente reagiu bem ao tratamento. The audience reacted to the presentation with applause.

19. Resistir a To resist

Ela não consegue resistir a um doce. She can’t resist a sweet.

O prédio resistiu ao terremoto sem danos.The building resisted the earthquake without damages.

20. Responder a To respond to/ to answer

Os bombeiros responderam ao pedido de ajuda. (The firemen responded to the call for help.)

O professor respondeu às perguntas dos alunos. (The professor responded to his students’ questions.)
