Hi guys! Today, I am inIsla Mujeres, Mexico. Isla Mujeresis a small island very close to Cancun. And while I’m here, I decided to record a video to talk to you about beach vocabulary, which can be very useful if you’re planning to go to the beach in Brazil.

Praia (beach)

This place where I am is called beach. I love going to the beach in the summer.

Mar (sea)

And right here, behind me, we have the sea or ocean. I love taking a sea bath and swimming in the sea, especially a sea of crystal clear and calm waters like this one.

Areia (sand)

Now, I’m walking in the sand. I love walking in the sand by the sea.

Coqueiro (coconut tree) & Água de coco (coconut water)

Here on this beach, there are many coconut trees, which is the tree that produces the coconut. I love coconut water. It is very healthy and is an excellent option to hydrate your body after sunbathing.

Protetor solar (sunscreen)

And speaking of sunbathing, I always bring sunscreen to the beach. I use a sunscreen for the face and another one for the body. I love sunbathing, so it’s very important to wear sunscreen.

Chapéu e óculos de sol (hat and sunglasses)

I also always wear a hat and sunglasses or dark glasses, to protect my face and my eyes from the sun.

Cadeira de praia (beach chair) & guarda-sol (beach umbrella)

Now, I’m sitting in a beach chair, right here behind me, and I’m under an umbrella.

Canga (beach towel) & toalha (towel)

When I don’t have a beach chair, I wear a beach towel to sit or lie on the sand. Beach towel is not the same as towel. Beach towel is what we use to lie on the sand, and towel is what we use to dry ourselves. I’ll show you. This is a beach towel, it’s made of a thin fabric, which I use to sit on the sand. And this is a towel.

Vestido de praia (beach dress) & saída de praia (beach cover-up)

Now, I’m wearing a beach dress, or beach cover-up and a bikini.

Bikíni (bikini) & maiô (one-piece swimsuit)

Bikini is what we call the 2-piece feminine swimwear. That swimwear that is one piece, is called one-piece swimsuit.

Sunga (speedo), calção de banho (swim trunk) & short de banho (swim shorts)

And men’s swimwear is called a speedo, which is what swimmers wear, or swim trunks, or swim shorts.

In Brazil, especially in Rio de Janeiro, it is very common to see men wearing speedos on the beach, but in the United States and other places I know, men usually wear swim shorts.

That’s it, guys!

Vocabulário usado na praia!

Oi pessoal!
